In the Philippines, luffas have been used as washing-up scourers for generations. The luffas are grown as a vegetable for use in stir fries and stews. The farmers allow some luffas to go to seed for the following season’s crop. Once the seeds are removed from the core, the remaining luffa is cut up and used as a scourer.
Michael’s Luffas are grown to a suitable size so that they fit neatly in the hand and inside glasses and cups. They become supple in water and can easily bend round rims of cups and reach into corners.
Michael’s Luffas are grown to organic standards but are not yet certified. It costs a considerable amount of money to gain certification and we are working towards it.
String for the hanging loop on the luffas and the bag are hand-made on the farm using fibre from the abaca plant, also known as Manila Hemp.
We work directly with the farmer and a fair price is paid by us to him and his workers.
Michael is the farmer’s son and lives on the farm.
